A Chance Encounter in Atlanta 

亚特兰大的偶遇

从1934年开始，上海最高的建筑物是高83.8米，22层的国际饭店。但是，1979年在美国乔治亚州首府亚特兰大市的一次戏剧性相遇改变了上海的城市风景线。

Since 1934, Shanghai's tallest building had been the 22-storey, 83.8 meter Park Hotel, but in 1979, an encounter in Atlanta, Georgia was about to change the Shanghai landscape dramatically.

随着中美外交关系的建立，邓小平访美下榻于亚特兰大市中心的桃树中心，并由这里的负责人和设计师约翰·波特曼（杰克·波特曼的父亲）招待。

Following the establishment of diplomatic relations, Deng visited the U.S., staying overnight at the Peachtree Center in downtown Atlanta. The Peachtree Center was designed by John Portman & Associates, founded and headed by John Portman, Jr., Jack's father.

这个先驱性的大型商务综合体包括了写字楼、购物中心、酒店、展览空间以及娱乐设施，是一个以人为本的开创性设计，给邓小平留下了深刻印象。他和约翰·波特曼相谈甚欢，而且特别提到：中国正需要这样的大型商务设施。

This pioneering mixed-use development with offices, shopping, hotel, exhibition space, and entertainment, featuring a people-oriented design, was groundbreaking, and it impressed the Chinese leader. He told John Portman as much, adding that China needed something just like it.

A Design for Shanghai

一座专为上海而设计的建筑

作为半个世纪以来上海最高的建筑物，上海商城

先驱性地成为了集酒店、办公、商场和剧院为一体的大型综合型建筑。拥有600间客房的酒店也成为了当时上海最大的酒店。独特的建筑设计风格，注定让上海商城成为上海的地标性建筑。

The city's tallest building in over half a century, with an unprecedented mix of facilities and modern amenities, including internet access, Shanghai Centre was desitned to be a Shanghai landmark: the biggest hotel in the city, with 600 guest rooms, offices, shops, a theatre, and exhibition space. Its unique architecutal design instantly made it an urban icon.

就像上海城市一样，上海商城的设计体现了中西方文化交融的特色，蕴含了装饰艺术的魅力，而且成为联系当地居民的纽带。下层的塔楼设计蕴含了中国特色：红漆柱影射出中国的宫廷建筑风格，拱门的灵感来自于酒店周围的传统老式里弄，而内部巨大的装饰艺术旋转楼梯则寓意一条盘旋向上的巨龙。

Like Shanghai itself, the desgin incorporated East, West and Art Deco, in a style that resonated with local residents. The lower levels feature Chinese details: red-painted columns recall Chinese palace architecture, the archways were inspired by the traditional Chinese lane neighborhoods that surrounded the hotel, a dramatic swirl of interior stairs with an Art Deco flair is said to resemble an ascending dragon.

中国元素集中体现在下层塔楼，杰克·波特曼说：“因为在大楼建造的时候，沿街两边的东面和西面设计成了两层式的中国式结构（里弄），这是展现当下上海的一个很好的方式，而33层和46层高的大楼则象征着上海的未来。”

The Chinese elements were incorporated on the lower levels, explains Jack Portman, because "at the time the building was constructed, along the streets on both sides, east and west, were two-storey Shanghai-style lane neighborhoods (linong). It was a way of reflecting the present, while the 33-and 46-storey towers reflected the future."

整个建筑包含装饰艺术风格，

而且呈现出“山”字形，

按照波特曼先生的说法，这是一个巧合。

上海商城仍保留了以人为本的设计理念，

这正是十年之前吸引邓小平主席的最大亮点。

灵感来自于中国宫廷建筑

Opening 开幕

上海商城的开幕仪式持续了三天，招待了6,000多位宾客。毋庸置疑，这是当代中国先驱性的建筑——无论高度、建筑设计、空间格局，还是景观视野，从50层楼的直升机停机坪上可以放眼看到上海商城的全貌，以及周围的社区。

The Shanghai Centre's opening celebration lasted three days, and hosted about 6,000 guests. And no wonder: this was a building unlike any other in modern China - the height, the architecture, the space, and views! From the helipad on the 50th floor, you could see the Shanghai Exhibition Centre and lane neighborhoods as far as the eye could see.

商场、办公室、公寓、展览区以及剧院都展示了当时的国际最高水平，而其中的酒店更是瑰宝： 600间豪华客房，城中最大的总统套房，时髦的现代化装饰布局，这里成为了街头巷尾热议的话题——而且持续不退。

Shops, offices, residences, the exhibition space, and the theatre were all state-of-the-art, but the hotel was the crowning jewel. With 600 rooms, the largest presidential suite in the city, and stylish contemporary décor, the hotel was the talk of the town - and would continue to be for decades to come.

上海波特曼香格里拉从1990年5月开业，运营了7年。1998年1月，上海波特曼丽思卡尔顿酒店正式开业。

The Portman Shangri-La Hotel operated from May 1990 until December 1997, and on January 1, 1998, The Portman Ritz-Carlton, Shanghai opened its door.
